VODA worked with LYRB and Salt Lake County planning and economic development staff to create  a new “Best Practice” document to guide future economic development in the region. This document was added to the Best Practices document developed in 2008 by VODA, CRSA, and others for inclusion in Salt Lake County’s Township General Plans. The Economic Development Best Practice focuses on specific funding mechanisms that will best assist local governments in ensuring development is guided and sustainable.   In 2010 the Township General Plans were awarded a “plan development” award by the Utah Chapter of the American Planning Association.

GIS and other mapping software was used to analyze environmental and developmental constraints to development in the study area.

In 2009 VODA worked on a team at CRSA to assist Nibley City in creating new Commercial and Institutional Design Standards. These standards were developed with the input of both the Planning Commission and City Council, and adopted successfully in 2009.  Several meetings were held directly with the City Council, and weekly progress reports were provided the Nibley City Planner. Of particular interest for the process was the way that commercial development along the Hwy 89/91 corridor would create “sense of place” for Nibley.

Working on a team at CRSA, Mark Morris from VODA assisted Lewis Young Robertson & Burningham in crafting an economic development plan for the city of Lehi, along the I-15 Corridor.  Driven by economic analysis, this strategic plan focused on economic opportunity along future transportation systems planned for the corridor.

Shopping malls are becoming more of a place to have an experience and not just a place to buy clothing or jewelry. Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego knew that in order to keep the customers coming, and the retail stores thriving they needed to update their facilities, atmosphere and landscape.
By coordinating with the architects and thinking about entry experiences and creating room-like spaces Design Workshop achieved a plan that will update the mall into an experience for all visitors. The landscape will be more interactive, the entrances will be more dynamic and experiential, the plant palette, furnishings and lighting will be sophisticated and modern, combining to create a more elegant and inviting atmosphere, enticing more visitors to come and stay longer.
